The Park was initially opened in 1857. It was later improved and expanded according to Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux’s Greensward Plan, after which it was reopened in 1873. Central Park is comprised of 341 hectares (843 acres). It is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) long and 0.8 kilometers (0.5 mile) wide. Central Park initially consisted of 315 hectares (778 acres) when it was first opened in 1857.

The Park’s 341 hectares (843 acres) include 55 hectares (136 acres) of woodlands, 101 hectares (250 acres) of lawns, and 61 hectares (150 acres) of water in seven water bodies. Central Park was first approved in 1853 as a 778-acre (315 ha) park. In 1857, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and architect/landscape designer Calvert Vaux won a design competition to construct the park with a plan they titled the “Greensward Plan”. Construction began the same year, and the park’s first areas were opened to the public in late 1858. Additional land at the northern end of Central Park was purchased in 1859, and the park was completed in 1876. After a period of decline in the early 20th century, New York City parks commissioner Robert Moses started a program to clean up Central Park. Another decline in the late 20th century spurred the creation of the Central Park Conservancy in 1980, which refurbished many parts of the park during the 1980s and 1990s.

Central Park was one of those best outdoor venues for huge concerts. But not only that, it is even one of the venue for the largest concerts ever in terms of estimated attendance. That seems quite a feat but the huge space that the park offers was able to accommodate around 980,000 attendees during Garth Brooks’ concert in 1997.  Main attractions of the park include the Ramble and Lake; several amusement attractions including Wollman Rink, Central Park Carousel, and the Central Park Zoo; Sheep Meadow; the Central Park Mall; Bethesda Terrace; the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir; and the Delacorte Theater that hosts Shakespeare in the Park programs in the summertime. The park also has sports facilities, including the North Meadow Recreation Center, basketball courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields.

Found in the midst of Manhattan island, Central Park covers around 3.5 square miles and stretches across 843 acres of land. Such dimensions make the park larger than Vatican city and almost six times larger than Monaco. If that isn’t huge, then we don’t know what is. Central Park is full of attractions, from green meadows to sprawling waters, gardens and unique bridges, music and performance centers, educational facilities, classical architecture and more. Its picturesque beauty boasts natural green landscapes and vistas as far as the eye can see.

Cherry Blossom Trees in Central Park. In the springtime from April to May, the cherry blossom trees in Central Park attract nature lovers from all over the world. It’s easy to see why, as the splendor of their blooms is as stunning as it is explosive. Full bloom of the cherry blossom trees is a sight to behold, and it’s typically reached within a week after the first buds open. Symbolic of the fleeting nature of life, their season is short-lived and the blossoms stick around for just a short time longer before their delicate petals fall to the ground, covering in a blanket of pink and white.
