The Maldives of Philippines – Buntod Sandbar Masbate City

Masbate, officially the Province of Masbate is an island province in the Philippines located near the midsection of the nation’s archipelago. Its provincial capital is Masbate City. The province consists of three major islands: Masbate, Ticao and Burias.

The province lies roughly at the center of the Philippine archipelago, between latitudes 11°43’ north and 123°09’ east and 124°5’ east. It is bounded on the north by Burias and Ticao Pass, east by San Bernardino Strait, south by the Visayan Sea, and west by the Sibuyan Sea. Relative to mainland Bicol, the province faces the southwestern coasts of Camarines Sur, Albay, and Sorsogon areas. Masbate covers a total area of 4,151.78 square kilometres (1,603.01 sq mi).

Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary is situated in Masbate City. This 250-hectare marine sanctuary was established in 2001. It is located in the middle of seawaters of two barangays namely Nursery and Tugbo. The waters are so clean and clear. From this area, there is a long sandbar; the locals say that one of the side of it is warm while the other side is cold.  Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary, the place where the sandbar and clear waters meet the mangrove haven.

According to the government of Masbate City,  Buntod Sandbar and Reef Marine Sanctuary ranked as the Philippines second most resilient coral reef area in terms of broad-scale and local-scale factors (Bucol et.al, 2011). It occupies 20 hectares of core zone and 100 hectares of buffer zone. Since the tourist spot is under the care of the Philippine government, you have to obey the rules and regulations governed by the tourist officers. Upon entering the sandbar, tourist must sign in the logbook for facilitated monitoring of the number of visitors already in the area. Adhering to the concepts of responsible traveling and ecological conservation, several practices would be maintained in the area.
