Village of in Santorini, Greece Travel Destination and Facts
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it’s often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.
Oia is a coastal town on the northwestern tip of Santorini, a Greek Aegean island. The town has whitewashed houses carved into the rugged clifftops, and overlooks a vast caldera filled with water. In a 19th-century mansion, the Naval Maritime Museum has exhibits on local seafaring history, including old figureheads, sailors’ chests and models of old ships. Nearby is the ruined Oia Castle, known for its sunset views.
“Oi” in Greek is pronounced “ee”, so the pronounciation of Oia is “eea”. In my opinion Oia is much more beautiful and upscale than Imerovigli. 2. Re: How the heck do you pronounce Oia!!
The main street of Oia has plenty of tourist shops and some pretty nice galleries, some of which have big signs that say ‘No Photo’ which is pretty stupid when you consider that every photo that gets posted on Facebook is an advertisement for the island or whatever shop or gallery the photo is of. Actually if there were not a sign that said ‘No Photo’ I would have taken some photos and advertised the gallery for free.
The village of Imerovigli, also known as “The balcony to the Aegean”, is built on the highest point of the caldera cliffs, about 300 meters above sea level. It is situated at the north part of the island, 3 kilometers from the capital of Fira. Its position provides a magnificent view of the famous volcano, the sparkling Aegean Sea and the sunset that is out of this world.
